Social and Regional
Variation in Sociolinguistics
If
language is a phenomenon which includes all the language in the world,
language variation can be defined as different kinds of those languages.
What make one variety of language different from another are the
linguistic item that involves in it. It is supported by Hudson (1992:
22) he stated that a variety of language is defined as a set of language
items with similar distribution. It means that the same spread of society
has its own speech features which involve presumably sounds, words, grammatical
features, and etcetera. He also gave the example of language variation such as,
Canadian English, London English, the English of football commentaries and so
on.
Language
variation occurs in the society because of some social factors
and context. It is supported by Holmes (2001: 6) he stated that “variety refers
to any set of linguistic forms which patterns according to social factors. He
also stated that variety is a sociolinguistic term referring to language in
context. These statements mean that language variation is a set of
linguistic forms used under specific social circumstances.
From
the statements above, it can be concluded that language variation happen because
of the context where the language is used and the specific social
circumstances around the language. There
are two kind of variation that want to be discussed here; regional
variation and social variation.
Explaination
From the article above, there
are many kinds of preposition. Before we go through the explanation, let’s know
what the preposition is.
Oxford Dictionary, preposition (n) (grammar)a word of groupnof
words, such as,in, from, to, out of and on behalf of, used before a noun or
pronoun to show place, position, time, or method.
So, first paragraph “If
language is a phenomenon which includes all the language in the world,
language variation can be defined as different kinds of those languages.” Preposition in on
that sentence show place, then of from the last sentence tell the part of
preposition. In line 2, “What make one variety of
language different from another are the linguistic item that involves
in it.” It is seems like first line, that in, of explain location or position.
Second paragraph, “Language
variation occurs in the society because of some social factors
and context.” From the sentence above, same with
the first paragraph, most of are preposition such as in, of, explain location or preposition. In line 2 “These statements mean that
language variation is a set of linguistic forms used under
specific social circumstances. The preposition under explain about position.
